Asthma and its treatment

ASTHMA

Asthma is an ancient Greek word meaning 'panting or shortdrawn breath'. It is an allergic condition resulting from the reaction of the body to one or more allergens, and is the most troublesome of respiratory diseases. An asthma patient gets frequent attacks of breathlessness, in between which he may even be completely normal.

Asthma Symptoms

Gasping for breath

Patients suffering from asthma appear to be gasping for breath. Actually, they have more difficulty in breathing out than breathing in, and this is caused by spasms or sudden involuntary muscular contractions of the smaller air passages in the lungs.

Asthma Causes

Allergy caused by weather conditions

Asthma is caused by a variety of factors. It may be due to an allergy caused by weather conditions, food, drugs, perfumes, and other irritants. Allergies to dust are the most common.

Asthma Cures

Asthma treatment using Honey

Honey is one of the most common home remedies for asthma. It is said that if a jug of honey is held under the nose of an asthma patient and he inhales the air that comes into contact with it, he starts breathing easier and deeper.

Asthma treatment using Figs

Among fruits, figs have proved very valuable in asthma. They give comfort to the patient by draining off the phlegm. Three or four dry figs should be cleaned thoroughly with warm water and soaked overnight.

Asthma treatment using Lemon

Lemon is another fruit found beneficial in the treatment of asthma. The juice of one lemon, diluted in a glass of water and taken with meals, will bring good results

Asthma treatment using Indian Gooseberry(Amla)

Indian gooseberry has also proved valuable in asthma. Five grams of gooseberry mixed with one tablespoon of honey forms an effective medicinal tonic for the treatment of this disease. It should be taken every morning

Asthma treatment using Bitter Gourd Roots

The roots of the bitter gourd plant have been used in folk medicine for asthma since ancient times. A teaspoon of the root paste, mixed with an equal amount of honey or juice of the tulsi leaves, given once every night for a month, acts as an excellent medicine for this disease.

Asthma treatment using Drumstick Leaves

A soup prepared from drumstick leaves, and taken once daily, has been found beneficial in the treatment of asthma. This soup is prepared by adding a handful of leaves to 180ml of water and boiling it for five minutes. After being allowed to cool, a little salt, pepper, and lime juice may be added to this soup.

Asthma treatment using Ginger

A teaspoon of fresh ginger juice, mixed with a cup of fenugreek decoction and honey to taste, acts as an excellent expectorant in cases of asthma. The decoction of fenugreek can be made by mixing one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a cupful of water.. This remedy should be taken once in the morning and once in the evening.

Asthma treatment using Garlic

Garlic is another effective home remedy for asthma. Ten garlic cloves, boiled in 30 ml of milk, make an excellent medicine for the early stages of asthma. This mixture should he taken once daily by the patient. Steaming ginger tea with two minced garlic cloves in it, can also help to keep the problem under control, and should be taken in the morning and evening.

Asthma treatment using Bishop's Weed

The herb bishop's weed has been found valuable in asthma. Half a teaspoon of bishop's weed should be mixed in a glass of buttermilk and taken twice daily. It is an effective remedy for relieving difficult expectoration caused by dried-up phlegm. A hot poultice of the seeds should be used for dry fomentation to the chest twice daily. The. patient can also inhale steam twice a day from boiling water mixed with ajwain. It will dilate the bronchial passages.

Asthma treatment using Safflower

Safflower seeds are beneficial in the treatment of bronchial asthma. Half a teaspoon of powder of the dry seeds, mixed with a tablespoon of honey, can be taken once or twice a day in treating this disease. This acts as an expectorant and reduces the spasms by liquefying the tenacious sputum. An infusion of five grams of flowers mixed with one tablespoon of honey, taken once daily, is also useful in this disease.

Diet for Asthma

The patient should avoid common dietetic errors. Ideally, his diet should contain a limited quantity of carbohydrates, fats and proteins which are 'acid-forming' foods, and a liberal quantity of alkali-forming foods consisting of fresh fruits, green vegetables, sprouted seeds, and grains. The patient should avoid foods which tend to produce phlegm, such as rice, sugar, lentils, and curds. He should also avoid fried and other difficult to-digest foods, strong tea, coffee, alcoholic beverages, condiments pickles, sauces and all refined and processed foods.

Fasting and exercises

The patient should also follow the other laws of nature. Air, sun, and water are great healing agents. Regular fasting once a week, an occasional enema, breathing exercises, fresh air, a dry climate, light exercises, and correct posture go a long way in treating the disease.

Foot care during monsoon

Foot care during monsoon

If you want to know whether a person is hygienic or not, a glance at the feet is enough, thus the health of your feet plays a much important role in your overall personality.

Did you know that a bare feet can drive a man crazy? We all are aware of the sex appeal associated with long legs that we keep them smooth and silky. But the same time, we neglect our feet. Foot care takes a back seat when compared to our other beauty treatments. Unfortunately little care is given to the most strained and worked out part – the feet.
You need to take proper care of your feet, washing and scrubbing them properly, moisturizing them on a regular basis, and so on. The need to keep your feet beautiful and healthy is obvious. Especially during monsoon as they will be more vulnerable to infections and ailments.
Walking in the rain may be fun, but you can’t destroy the germs by simply washing away the dirt with water. Intense care is needed, as you can’t compromise with the health of your feet.

What you should do:
  • Intense cleansing of feet is very important in monsoon as they would get accumulated with dirt and mud.
  • Avoid wearing boots and shoes as they hold water thereby making it sodden. Use slippers or sandals instead.
  • Every time you are back after going out in rain, wash your feet thoroughly and dry them completely, especially between the toes to prevent fungal infections.
  • When you apply the moisturiser, avoid putting it between your toes.
  • Home pedicure should be done once in a week. If you opt to go to a beautician, ensure that the instruments used are sterilized/ cleansed with disinfectants. But it’s always better to do it at home using your personal instruments.
  • For a pedicure at home, soak your feet in a mixture of warm water, lemon juice and liquid hand wash. Then scrub you feet with a foot scrubber or pumice stone or exfoliating scrub to remove the dead skin. Also you can use hydrogen peroxide to clean the nails. After that dry your feet, trim your nails and push back the cuticle. You have to rinse your feet once again and pat them dry. Afterward you can have a foot massage with a light moisturiser as it helps to stimulate the nerve endings.
  • If you don’t have enough time for all these, you can try another easy step. For this, all you need to have is lemon juice and soft tissues/cotton. First clean your feet in lukewarm water using mild soap and pat it dry. Take a mixture of water and lemon in equal quantity. Dip the tissue or cotton into this mixture and apply it to your feet. This simple procedure will help to remove the odour and also smoothens your feet.
  • Seek advice from a chiropodist
These simple and easy steps will enhance the beauty and health of your feet. Also this will make a man fall head over heels for you.

Genelia D'souza the new brand ambassador of Fanta

Genelia D'souza the new brand ambassador of Fanta

Genelia D'Souza is among those Bollywood actresses who have undergone great makeovers that have not only changed their appearance, but consequently also their appeal.

Recently, there was a news report that Genelia was shooting for Ken Ghosh's Yahoo and the crowds descended on her in huge numbers because she was wearing a mini-skirt.

Genelia could hardly have attracted such crowds in her early days when her look was still not so polished.

However, once she started working on improving her appearance, movies and even endorsements started pouring in.

Genelia made a big splash in Bollywood in 2008 with Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na.

With her new look, Genelia managed to focus on the youngster in her and therefore she replaced Rani Mukherjee as the brand ambassador of Fanta.

Hawaii Volcanoes, Walking With the Lava Junkies

Hawaii Volcanoes

Fire Walking With the Lava Junkies

"We took a helicopter to the rim and hiked about a mile [1.6 kilometers] into the steaming cauldron of Kilauea's Pu'u 'O'o crater to this skylight. Geologists call the skylight the Cookie Monster because it really looks like the shape of the character on Sesame Street."

Plumes of gas escaping from vents as lava meets air

From the helicopter, we saw lava splashing and frothing 50 feet [15 meters] below the surface in these 75- to 100-foot-wide [23- to 30-meter-wide] pools.

Lava breaks out of its shell of hardened, black rock

This is a breakout, or a live surface flow of molten rock. The magma was oozing under the skin of cooled black rock—it's hotter than hell up there. Eventually a buildup of pressure under a certain place will crack the surface over it, and the lava will break out.

The Highcastle lava bench (new land that is formed as lava cools)

This was our final quest—the ocean entry at Highcastle, the holy grail for lava photographers. The lava was coming over the last cliff before entering the ocean.

A lava breakout from newly cooled rock

If I stepped on the gray rock in this photo, it would feel like stepping into a fire. You can pass over it if you move really quickly. You just dance along.

Lava spiraling down a slope

This is wild. As the drops break out down the slope, the pressure moving the lava, pushing on the cooling skin above it, twists the skin into ropes. This is classic pahoehoe lava. Even where I was standing, the temperature underfoot was a few hundred degrees [approximately 150°C] at least, and there are radiant rocks above me.

The deceptive calm of an extremely hot flow

This shot may look like a dreamy day on the side of a volcano, but it was really wicked. I am standing downwind of an a'a flow, which is notorious for emitting an exceptional amount of radiant heat. It was really, truly ferociously hot.
