Israel lets Gaza export Valentine's Day flowers

Israel lets Gaza export Valentine's Day flowers

KEREM SHALOM, Israel (AP) — Israel is relaxing its blockade of the Gaza Strip to let through 25,000 carnations headed to Europe for Valentine's Day.

But the head of the Gaza flower growers' association said that was "nothing" compared to the 40 million flowers a year that came out of the territory before the blockade.

The flowers will be Gaza's first exports in a year. Israel has blockaded Gaza since Hamas militants seized control of the territory in June 2007.

Israeli military spokesman Maj. Peter Lerner said Israel agreed to let the flowers through at the request of the Dutch government and Gaza farmers.

Lerner called the move an Israeli gesture and said it did not indicate any change in the overall policy toward Gaza.

But Mohammed Khalil, head of the Gaza flower growers' association, dismissed the move as "nothing."

Khalil said Gaza used to export 40 million flowers a year, so 25,000 carnations is insignificant.

"We had to feed the flowers to the animals because we couldn't export them," he said. "We are afraid of losing our reputation in Europe and are afraid to plan ahead."

Cyber criminals love a good Valentine's Day

Cyber criminals love a good Valentine's Day

PUNE: As Valentine's Day approaches, people's thoughts turn to romance and flowers. For the cyber criminal, however, it heralds another opportune moment to draw an unsuspecting user in. Many of the most common scams around February rely on existing vulnerabilities in software, spam, fake sites and distraction techniques.

"Organised criminal units have a long history of timing their attacks to coincide with popular occasions in order to achieve maximum success," says Surendra Singh, regional director, SAARC and India, for IT security firm Websense, Inc.

Singh said that in the weeks running up to February 14, many emails that promote love or dating opportunities are already doing the rounds. Websense Security labs have seen several fake Valentine's Day sites serving up malware, an increase in adult dating and healthcare'-related email spam, and blended email/web/phone techniques, promoting premium rate phone services which are a good way to make a fast buck, Singh pointed out.

Cyberoam, a division of Elitecore Technologies that has innovated Unified Threat Management Plus (UTM+) solutions, also warned of increased spam attacks tied to Valentine's Day. Spammers are including attachments and links in emails leveraging subject lines such as I Love You Soo Much'; Inside My Heart'; or You... In My Dreams'; My Valentine Sunshine'; and Be My Valentine', to exploit unsuspecting targets.

Once these attachments are opened or the links are clicked, malware is instantly downloaded. The success of these attacks depends on social engineering techniques that are targeting a younger demographic, particularly students and teenagers that will use the internet to buy discounted Valentine's gifts, flowers and send e-cards.
"Spammers are renowned for tying large-scale spam attacks to significant holidays and events, so it's important for organisations to warn employees and students against opening emails from people they don't know," says Joshua Block, VP of North American Operations, Cyberoam.

Unfortunately the web page is one big image and a single click from a tricked user commences the download of Trojans named "onlyyou.exe" or "youandme.exe" which are not as friendly as they sound. The Trojan can connect to remote websites to receive commands and send information about the compromised system.

According to Singh, the three top things to look out for are, Broken hearts', I'm your friend' and Money can't buy you love'. Broken hearts are sites that show colourful images such as puppy dogs or a picture of 12 pretty hearts and ask "Guess, which one is for you?"

A popular technique doing the rounds at the moment is spam email pretending to originate from social networking sites complete with love hearts and cartoon characters. If you were to click through to the link on the email the user would unwittingly download a banking Trojan designed to steal log in credentials for banking sites, Singh warned.

Thirdly, said Singh, messages such as Money can't buy you love' may get you a masked redirect. "Seventy per cent of the top 100 most popular websites either hosted malicious content or contained a masked redirect to lure unsuspecting victims from legitimate sites to malicious sites.
In fact, we have seen specially created malicious sites decline as cyber criminals switch to compromising trusted' websites. They are cashing in, literally, on our increased confidence in shopping and researching online a lot of which happens whilst in the office.

"As people turn to the internet to order flowers, chocolates and other gifts so too are cyber criminals turning to these sites to compromise them and steal data," Singh explained. Spam attacks of this nature often lead to a malware download that can infect PCs, and potentially lead to a download of the Storm Worm botnet that is notorious for spreading emails with malware that can launch Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. These attacks also often lead to email campaigns that put many in danger of information and identity theft.

Shantanu Ghosh, vice-president of India operations for software security firm Symantec, said spammers have continued centring their social engineering tactics on holiday and gift themes. "While subject lines like Great watches for your Valentine' and Best Valentine's gift ever' continued, Symantec has observed that some other subject lines shifted a little towards the obscene this year. Increase your length, the best Valentine's gift' and Show off your length for Valentine's', were some of the top subject lines this time round," Ghosh said.

"Spammers are using our appetite for social networking and turning to properties such as Twitter, Facebook and Myspace as new ways to trick users into visiting fake sites, installing viruses and spreading malware on the internet. Web spam, in blogs and on comments pages, is also on the rise. Be wary of links posted by strangers on your blog, chances are the link may not lead to you finding the love they promised," Singh observed.

According to Ghosh, not responding to spam would be the best way to address the threat, though in the long run, getting multiple email addresses for multiple purposes would be safer. "Have one email address specifically for personal use, known only to family, friends and colleagues. Another email address could be used for mailing lists and newsletters, and still another for online inquires and orders," Ghosh advised.

Sena plans protest on Valentine's Day

Sena plans protest on Valentine's Day

MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena has told its shakha pramukhs in the city to launch a protest

against Valentine's Day celebrations on Saturday. The public outburst against the Shriram Sene's recent mayhem in Mangalore has not dampened the party's enthusiasm for moral policing.

"The Sena has, for long, been protesting the festivities. We will go ahead with our action plan on Saturday,'' Arun Dudhwadkar, `vibhag-pramukh' of south Mumbai said on Thursday.

Pointing out that Sena chief Bal Thackeray and party executive president Uddhav Thackeray were "stridently opposed'' to Valentine's Day celebrations, Dudhwadkar said, "The guidelines have been set by Balasaheb and Uddhav-ji. There is no change in the party's policy. So Shiv Sainiks will launch a series of protests against V-Day festivities,'' he added. However, the Sena official refused to reveal his "action plan'' for south Mumbai.

"I can only tell you that several leading departmental and book stores have been calling up my office throughout the day, wanting to find out about our plan. I told them that we would go ahead with our protest. Now, it is for them to draw up their course of action.''

Asked if the Sainiks would barge into city colleges, Dudhwadkar was non-committal. "Let's see how it works out,'' he said, adding, "While we don't wish to disrupt campus life, major celebrations will not be allowed anywhere.''

Talking to mediapersons on Wednesday, senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi said Sainiks would stop Valentine's Day celebrations in keeping with the party policy. A report in `Saamna,' the Sena mouthpiece, on Joshi's statement is being seen by the party rank and file as an `aadesh' (directive) from Matoshree.

"The day is against Indian culture and tradition. We were opposed to it in the past and there is no change in the party's stand on the issue,'' said Joshi.

Asked about the police crackdown on Sainiks, the former Lok Sabha speaker added, "The Sena is wedded to its principles. We are not afraid of police action.''

Anil Parab, vibhag-pramukh of Mumbai north-west said that Valentine's Day festivities would pass off peacefully as shopping malls and departmental stores impose "self-regulation'' following the Sena threat.

"The usual practice is that we call on the leading stores, malls and brief them about our protest plan. They cancel celebrations on their own. This helps defuse the crisis,'' Parab said, adding, "This year too we will follow the same strategy.''

Valentine's Day cheer for businesses

Valentine's Day cheer for businesses

Despite the economic downturn, business is picking up ahead of Valentine's Day

New Delhi: If you think the economic downturn means no special Valentine’s gift from your loved ones, you may be in for a pleasant surprise. For some businesses, Valentine’s Day is the single most important day for sales and the trends indicate that this year will be no different. Pawan Gadia, VP of Ferns and Petals says it hasn’t seen a downward trend in the shopping habits of Valentine’s Day customers compared with last year.

On average, February 13th, the most popular day for shopping, registers over 1000% increase in sales versus other days. Gadia expects the trend to continue this year. In addition, his customer base for Valentine’s Day has grown 20-25% year on year since the year 2000 and customers now have more platforms to place orders, like the website and over mobile phones.

Archies, the popular chain of gift shops says 16% of its annual turnover comes from Valentines Day sales. And it has been growing at 15-16% yearly for the last 6 to 7 years. It says the daily data received so far shows no change in buying patterns of customers compared with last year.

Valentine’s Day is recession proof, as the data shows so far”, says Youhan Aria, Head of Corporate Communications for Archies.

QBA, a trendy restaurant in central Delhi, dines about 350 people a day - on Valentine’s Day, it is expecting to dine around 500 - the same as last year. It has however decided not to raise the price of its Valentine’s buffet, also keeping it the same as last year. “We’re not raising prices [of the Valentine’s Day buffet] keeping in mind the recession”, says Sunil Tickoo, General Manager of WG Hospitality which owns QBA. “A lot of people and corporates are not spending as much so we’re giving a much better spread this year for the same price

(as last year), ” he adds.

Recession hit Valentine's Day preparations

Recession hit Valentine's Day's preparations

JAIPUR: Look before you (show your) love, seems to be the mantra this Valentine's Day, with prices soaring and pockets shrinking, this time around the love birds seem to watch their wallets as they express their emotions on the day of love.

From love birds to those who cater to them, every one seems to be reeling under the recession blues.

"Every year I gift my girlfriend something which is expensive than the one I gave her last year, but this time around I think it will be great if I could match my last year's gift," says a BPO executive Bhanu, who gifted his girlfriend of three years a hi end watch last year that burnt a five digit hole in his pocket.

The city's watering holes and dining joints too are taking into account the financial crunch and accordingly have priced their day's offerings. "We have reduced the price for our candlelight dinner for a couple by Rs 600. This time it's for Rs 900 while we sold the same for Rs 1,500 last year, also other offerings have been reduced to encourage people to come out and indulge," says Sujan Ganguly of the Wall Street Hotel. Also the first timers in the business are keeping a tab on their prices; Manmohan Singh of hotel Ramada says that, "This is our first Valentine's Day and we are arranging a Cupid theme party to mark the day and have kept the disc entry price for a couple at Rs 1,000 that is redeemable for food and beverage."

While high end gifting might take a beating, the time tested red roses are going strong, while a single rose, now comes for Rs 10, the price is going to double or even more on the V-day. At outlets like Ferns n Petals couples have already started making bookings and the most popular are combos of cakes and roses, "An average spending is anything from Rs 500 onwards," says Rekha Gupta, franchisee owner. "Can't say if this is less than last year, but people should indulge on this day," she adds. And to lure customers their online shopping offers discounts close to 25% for flower delivery on V-Day eve.

Same goes for ever green cars and retails have ensured that their ranges are more affordable. As harsh Bhati of Archies puts it, "We have a range for every one, the cards start from Rs 50 and go on to Rs 1,000 and we have made sure that our special range too starts from a reasonable price, one can gift a musical heart that starts from Rs 99 onwards."

While the majority are cautious, some are more adventurous, beating the recession blues, some couples have come forward and are gifting their love mates a 15 minute ride in the Pink City skies for a whopping Rs 22,000. Chopper services palace on Wings have come up with this novel ideas and when asked isn't the price a cause of concern for them? Capt. Vibhooti Singh Deora, CEO, Palace on Wings, says, "Well this is a flight of fantasy, it's a one of its kind endeavour, first in India. As for the price, people are already coming in with requests and we have over 10 couples coming in on the first day."

With options galore, you have a lot to chose from if you haven't already!

Anti-Valentine's Day Protests In India Get A Frilly Response

HINDU TALIBAN: Anti-Valentine's Day Protests In India Get A Frilly Response

The Indian Consortium of Pub-Going, Loose and Forward Women is fighting back against right-wing extremist group Sri Ram Sena, often called the Hindu Taliban.

According to the reporter, the Consortium was started on Facebook last week and plans to send the extremist group hundreds of pairs of pink underwear on Valentine's Day in response to the group's violent bar attacks on women last month.

Ms Susan said the group expected to collect at least 500 pieces of pink underwear from all over the country and send them to Mr Mutalik's office in the southern city of Hubli.

"It's a choice between ignoring a group like Ram Sena or responding to its activities. We have decided to give it attention, but it is attention which it will not like," she said.

The website of an Indian television station, explains that Sri Ram Sena attempts to be the moral police of India by lashing out against activities it views as unacceptable, such as women drinking in pubs or couples celebrating Valentine's Day.

Pramod Muthalik is the man who laid the foundation of the right-wing Hindu group called the Sri Ram Sena.

"Whoever has done this has done a good job. Girls going to pubs is not acceptable. So, whatever the Sena members did was right. You are highlighting this small incident to malign the BJP government in the state," said Pramod.

Sri Ram Sena has vowed to protest against Valentine's Day this Saturday,

Five teams formed in Hubli, Bangalore to oppose V-Day

Five teams formed in Hubli, Bangalore to oppose Valentine's-Day

HUBLI: Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Mutalik has urged the Congress to expel Union women and child welfare minister Renuka Chowdhury from primary membership of the party.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Mutalik said Renuka's `Pub Bharo' call is in breach of Congress' principle of not supporting alcoholism. "Hence, the party should seek her resignation immediately," he said.

Coming down heavily on Renuka and National Women Commission (NWC) for rejecting the report submitted by its member Nirmala Venkatesh about Mangalore pub incident, Mutalik said they were expecting a report "just to put the entire blame on the Sena or the BJP government".

Firm on opposing V-Day

Mutalik reiterated that Sena activists will peacefully protest against celebrating Valentine's Day, "a part of western culture". A helpline will function on February 14 to help girls who are tortured by boys, he said.

Five teams, each in Bangalore and Hubli, have been formed to marry off couples celebrating Valentine's Day after informing their parents. Even inter-caste couples will not be spared, Mutalik said, adding his teams will be assisted by Sene activists from Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, New Delhi and West Bengal.

Reacting to the government announcing protection for those celebrating Valentine's Day, he said BJP, which was chanting Hindutva before coming to power, will do anything to remain in power. He also accused the saffron party of trying to weaken the pro-Hindu outfits in the state.

About Majeshwar MLA accusing Sena for abducting his daughter Shruthi, he said he would file a defamation suit against the Kerala legislator in the High Court for trying to malign the image of Sena.

Future plans

Speaking about future course of action, Mutalik said: "Sena will take up other issues concerning women and Hindu culture in the future. A membership campaign across several states will be launched soon. The Rajasthan wing of Shiv Sena will soon be merged with Sri Rama Sene under the leadership of former Rajasthan Shiv Sena chief Atul Gupta."

Mutalik clarified that neither he nor his Sene has plans to contest in the forthcoming Parliament elections. Criticizing the BJP for raking up Ram Mandir issue, Mutalik said they only talk of it whenever the elections are round the corner.
