Ten Questions for Tonight's Presidential News conference:

Ten Questions for Tonight's Presidential News Conference

President Obama asserts that failure to pass the economic stimulus package will result in a “catastrophe.” Since he’s about to be handed one trillion dollars, it might be a good idea for the press to ask him what he and his economic advisors project will happen if the stimulus bill passes. Nothing complex, just some simple comparatives:

1. You assert that without your economic stimulus plan unemployment will reach double digits. If your stimulus plan passes, as expected, what do you project the unemployment rate to be in one year? Two years? Three years?

2. How many jobs will the bill create in its first year? In what sectors of the economy will the job growth occur?

3. What will the deficit be in 2009? 2010? 2011?

4. What will the national debt be in 2009? 2010? 2011?

5. You have said that the economic situation is so serious that failure to immediately pass the plan would be a catastrophe. If the situation’s so serious, why is most of the spending slated to occur after the recession (according to historical patterns) will likely end? And if it’s so serious, why are tens of billions being spent on frivolous items?

6. Since we don’t have the money contained in the spending bill, when will you have to raise taxes? Which taxes will be raised and on whom? What will be the highest marginal rate?

7. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the economic stimulus package will actually stifle growth. If your bill passes, what do you project the nation’s GDP to be in 2009? 2010? 2011? What do your experts say the GDP will be if your bill doesn’t pass?

8. What do you and your advisors believe your plan will do to interest rates and the rate of inflation in the next five years?

9. What’s the percentage probability that the stimulus plan will work? If you can’t give an estimate, why should we give you one trillion dollars?

10. What’s your Plan B if the economic stimulus doesn’t work? What's your exit strategy if the plan actually does harm?

And two non-stimulus bonus questions:

1.The tax problems of Geithner, Daschle, Killefer, and Solis are different in kind and degree. Please describe your standards for permitting some tax scofflaws to remain in your administration but not others.
2.You 're about to ramp up military operations in Afghanistan but Russia has pressured Kyrgyzstan to forbid the U.S. from using the Manas air base crucial to supplying our forces in Afghanistan. What have you done about that?

2009 Superbowl MVP Prediction

2009 Superbowl MVP Prediction

For some football fans, and certainly some football bettors, the naming of the Super Bowl MVP winner is just as important as the outcome of the game itself. Some people view this as a relatively easy bet given that quarterbacks have garnered the award 22 times in 43 tries, but they would be remiss not to examine a few possible candidates who will not be tossing the ball around this evening.

This 2009 Super Bowl MVP Prediction comes courtesy of the oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com, who have over 18 individual players with listed Super Bowl XLIII MVP odds.

Most sportsbooks offer a wide array of MVP candidates, usually ranging from players with highly probable odds to guys with a snowball's chance in hell of winning the award. While some of the latter might merit a $10.00 flyer, it is worth the time to find players in the middling range to make a potential investment on. In light of that, here are a few performers that might be worth a play.

Steelers Wide Receiver Santonio Holmes. No other offensive player on the Pittsburgh roster has the big play capability that Holmes has. He will probably not catch the most passes, but his speed allows him to do quite a bit with the balls he does reel in. Look no further than the AFC Championship Game against the Ravens. Holmes took a routine 15 to 20 yard pass and turned it into a 65 yard touchdown. Also, as illustrated in the Steelers playoff win over the Chargers, Holmes can be a factor in the return game as well. His 67 yard punt return for a touchdown was the turning point in that game for Pittsburgh. At +1500 MVP odds, this former Buckeye is a pretty solid play.

Cardinals Wide Receiver Anquan Boldin. Boldin's post-season numbers have not matched his typical production, and that may be a result of the leg injury he sustained against the Vikings in week 14. If that is the reason, than he should be well rested and ready to regroup after sitting through the Super Bowl bye week. Additionally, some people may suspect that Arizona will punish Boldin for his encounter with offensive coodinator Todd Haley in the NFC Championship Game. The opposite is more likely true. The Cardinals want to win and there is no better way for them to do that than to have Boldin at full speed and deeply involved in the game plan. He could be ready to break out, and having a few bucks on a superstar with +1500 MVP odds is not a bad thing.

Steelers Safety Troy Polamalu. Everyone knows what this former Trojan can do when he is healthy; he is the driving force behind the Steelers defensive success. Not only is he a ball hawking safety with a nose for the big play, he is also a 207lb missle who loves to punish running backs. Kurt Warner is a fabulous player, but he is not incapable of committing a few errors. Who do you think is most likely to capitalize on any errant throws by the Arizona quarterback? That's right, Polamalu. This guy is a forced fumble and an interception return for a touchdown away from an MVP trophy. Man, don't you wish you had laid a little jack with those +1200 odds?

SBGglobal.com's 2009 Super Bowl MVP Prediction:

Favorites:
Ben Roethlisberger +175
Kurt Warner +200
Larry Fitzgerald +500

Matt Foust won both of his conference championship plays this past weekend and he is ready to serve up plenty of Super Bowl action. Each individual play costs $15.00, however, Point-Spreads.com recommends purchasing Matt's NFL Playoff Package which includes all of Matt's Super Bowl props and picks from just $45.00.

Holly Kyte reviews Mrs Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln's wife
Holly Kyte reviews Mrs Lincoln by Janis Cooke Newman

She was the original First Lady; the intelligent, determined wife of America's 'Martyred President' Abraham Lincoln. She was also a coquettish, extravagant and superstitious Southern belle who, thanks to her scandalous and 'unwomanly' behaviour, was publicly reviled and consigned to the madhouse by her own son. Mary Todd Lincoln's life was truly the stuff of novels and, in this ambitious debut, Janis Cooke Newman takes the logical step of writing it as such.

The book takes the form of a fictional memoir which the widowed Mrs Lincoln pens from Bellevue Place Sanatorium, where she was committed after an insanity trial in 1875. Amid the caterwauling of her fellow inmates, she relates her 'true story', alternating between her present efforts to escape bedlam and the key events in her past: her mother's early death, a turbulent courtship with the 'homely' Abraham, his political success at her instigation, the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, the deaths of three beloved sons and, of course, her husband's assassination as he sat beside her in the theatre.

It is a long, sombre tale, but this epic drama exerts an irresistible pull, chiefly because it boasts such a riveting and well-drawn heroine. Candid, self-aware and compellingly flawed, Mary Lincoln acknowledges a raft of irrational behaviour that includes exorbitant spending, reckless adultery and an increasing reliance on spiritualism. But given the mitigating circumstances of her extraordinary life and the lucidity of her account, it's hard to read this as the confessions of a lunatic.

This is puritanical 19th-century America after all. The so-called 'madness' that seeps through the narrative is simply another word for 'unseemly' female passion - something that is feared, loathed and curbed by the men in the novel. As a memoir, Mrs Lincoln is Mary's personal testimony to prove (to herself more than anyone) that she is not deranged. As a novel, it's an impressive, engrossing and moving piece of historical imagining and characterisation, which is given weight and authenticity by Newman's dedicated research as well as her evident affection for a woman who she believes was locked up simply for loving too much.

Janet’s getting in shape…again

Janet Jackson getting back in shape, plus dressing slimmer and burning fat with carbs

Janet’s getting in shape…again

The June 23 issue of Life & Style reports that Janet Jackson’s weight has been creeping up from the skinny state she was in last year. Witnesses at a show she taped for BET earlier this month said she clearly wasn’t comfortable with her now-bigger body and wasn’t showing any skin.

It’s estimated she’s gained about 20 pounds since last October, but with a tour planned to kick off in September, Jackson is sure to be slimming back down quickly.

She says she works out for an hour or so in the morning when she’s trying to get in shape for a tour, as well as doing an hour of stretching and dancing all day. She also works with a nutritionist, personal chef and trainer to help curb her self-proclaimed addiction to junk food, choosing grilled chicken instead of fried and fruit instead of chocolate.
Dressing to look skinny

The same issue includes tips from celebrity stylist Pamela Watson on how to look 10 pounds lighter just by wearing different clothes. Marcia Cross, for instance, looks large in a tunic dress but just right in a dress with a high waist and peep-toe shoes that show off her long legs.

Katherine Heigl looks better in skinny jeans and a belted jacket than a cropped loose jacket and wide-legged jeans, and Eva Longoria-Parker should pick a short dress over a floor-length number that just makes her look shapeless.
Choosing carbs to help burn fat

June 30’s issue of Woman’s World suggests that those carbs we’ve long been taught were bad, such as rice and pasta, might actually be beneficial when it comes to fat burning.

Researchers at the University of Colorado say that “resistant starch” found in carb-filled foods like potatoes can help people burn 20 to 25 percent more fat. The trick is that the starch needs to be consumed when the food is cold, such as in potato salad (or pasta or rice salad, for that matter).

Resistant starch is similar to fiber in that it resists being digested. Other starches are broken down quickly in the body, but this sort of starch is said to stick around and ferment, inhibiting the body from using carbohydrates for energy and causing fat to be burned instead.

What’s more, eating a diet full of resistant starch is said to help people feel full longer, stabilize the blood sugar and increase production of anti-hunger hormones. The magazine suggests filling up on fat-burning carbs like bananas, corn, beans, potatoes, brown rice, pasta, oatmeal and bread.

One reader who tried the plan said she ate pasta salad every day for a week and lost six pounds, and said the diet was easy and full of good foods.

Is Caroline Kennedy having an affair?

Caroline Kennedy’s rumored affair was with New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger. Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr. (born Sept 22 1951) is the son of Arthur Ochs Sulzberger aka Punch Sulzberger. The son is sometimes called Arthur Pinch Sulzberger as a variation of his father’s nickname

Kennedy is reportedly known to be friends with Sulzberger, and rumors of an affair between the two started earlier this month.

Earlier this week, Kennedy notified Governor David Paterson that she no longer wanted to be considered for the vacant Senate seat in New York. Caroline cited "personal problems" and reports surfaced yesterday that the problems involved taxes and a housekeeper.

“Obama recently named Caroline Kennedy to his vice presidential search committee - and she’s been telling friends that if he’s elected to the White House, she wants to move to Washington, D.C., and take a role in his Democratic administration,But the reality is that this plan is dulling the pain of her personal problems. Insiders believe that her marriage to Ed Schlossberg is pretty much over.” a friend revealed.
Times City Room Will Not Mention Caroline Kennedy’s Special Friendship With Pinch Sulzberger.Don’t even bother to leave a comment at the Times local news blog suggesting a sexy patrician affair between the Senator-to-be and the publisher of the Times.

It seems like a mostly legitimate question to ask, doesn’t it? Whether or not they’re having sexy sexy old rich scion s*x, the special friendship between Sulzberger and Kennedy is well-documented. And when the publisher of your paper is BFF with a public figure, asking whether that friendship affects coverage of that public figure is certainly fair game.

Kathy Hilton An American socialite

Kathy Hilton is American socialite and wife of Rick Hilton - one of the scions of the Hilton hotel dynasty - Multimillionaire Kathy Hilton enjoyed increased celebrity in the mid-2000s thanks in no small part to one of her daughters, media darling and "it girl" Paris Hilton. In 2005, Kathy briefly headlined her own reality series, I Want to Be a Hilton, which witnessed her teaching aspiring socialites with a marked lack of sophistication how to use proper etiquette.

Obama to Order to Close Guantanamo

WASHINGTON — President Obama is expected to sign executive orders Thursday directing the Central Intelligence Agency to shut what remains of its network of secret prisons and ordering the closing of the Guantánamo detention camp within a year, government officials said.

The orders, which would be the first steps in undoing detention policies of former President George W. Bush, would rewrite American rules for the detention of terrorism suspects. They would require an immediate review of the 245 detainees still held at the naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to determine if they should be transferred, released or prosecuted.

CHICAGO – “The Mentalist” is the only significant new hit for the 2008-2009 season and the number one rule in TV is that if something works once, try and replicate it. Viewers can expect to see dozens of clones of the Simon Baker series in the next few years. It is into this atmosphere that Fox hopes their newest crime series, “Lie To Me,” can find a loyal audience.

Network TV ratings may be sliding across the board, but there is one genre that seems more resilient to the erosion than others - the crime drama. From network staples like “CSI” to cable shows like “The Closer,” every network head is looking for the next procedural with a twist, the show that they can keep on the air for years, preferably with a revolving door cast and very little effort on their part.

The Lightman Group is a private agency hired to expose the truth behind the lies in the new series Lie To Me premiering Wednesday, Jan. 21 (9:03-10:06 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Pictured L-R: Kelli Williams, Tim Roth, Brendan Hines and Monica Raymund.

Fox’s “Lie To Me” is not a straight-up clone of “The Mentalist” (and, of course, it was in production before that show took off) but it certainly shares some character traits with CBS’ massively entertaining program in that it’s about a man who sees things in human behavior that the average crime fighter does not. Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) can not only tell if a suspect is lying, but can often take it a step further and tell you why someone is being deceptive. “Lie To Me” is based on the true discoveries of Dr. Paul Ekman, an expert in reading clues in the human face, body, and voice, often brought in to investigate criminal investigations.

The Lightman Group, headed by Tim Roth’s character, assists government agencies, police detectives, and federal law enforcement with issues of deception. Dr. Lightman’s right-hand woman is Dr. Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams of “The Practice”), a psychologist more interested in the general picture than her partner’s detail-oriented approach. Their chemistry is the highlight of the premiere and what the writers will need to focus on if “Lie To Me” is going to improve.

Drs. Lightman and Foster are assisted by a lead researcher named Eli Loker (Brendan Hines) and a new-hire named Ria Torres (Monica Raymund). The former gets to play comic relief with his practice of “radical honesty” and the latter is the “natural,” the rare person who can pick up on all the physical tics and verbal cues without much training

The team behind “Lie To Me,” including writer Samuel Baum (“The Evidence”) and the executive producers of “24” and “Arrested Development,” clutter their first episode with two cases, character introductions, and even jabs at real-life personalities to the point that the whole thing sinks under the weight of its concept. It feels forced.

Obama takes oath again after inauguration mistake

Obama takes oath again after inauguration mistake

US President Barack Obama has been administered the oath of office a second time at the White House because a word was out of sequence when he was sworn in yesterday.

Chief Justice John Roberts, who first administered the oath to Mr Obama on the steps of the US Capitol, also administered the oath to the president today in front of reporters.

The White House counsel said in a statement read by a spokesman the oath was administered a second time out of an "abundance of caution".

"We believe that the oath of office was administered effectively and that the President was sworn in appropriately yesterday," Robert Gibbs told reporters, quoting a statement from White House counsel Greg Craig.

"But the oath appears in the Constitution itself and, out of an abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath a second time."

After finishing the statement, Mr Gibbs ushered reporters into a room where Mr Obama was waiting, smiling, along with the Chief Justice.

The President spoke with journalists and then stood next to Roberts and took the oath again.

Shakira sings in the inauguration

Obama invites Shakira to sing at inauguration

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has invited Colombian singer Shakira to perform in the White House on the day of his inauguration that is on January 20th 2009.

"It's an honor to receive so much support from someone that talented and a person that generous," Obama said about Shakira.

Honestly it's an honor that the new president of the United States has invited the most successful Latin artist, Shakira to the Inaugural function.

Presedent Obama's first dance

President Barack Obama and his wife danced to the Etta James song "At Last", performed by Beyonce

(The First Lady to dance with President Barack Obama was his wife Michelle Obama.)
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, he was in a white tie and tux and she was in a white evening gown, they started the tour of inaugural balls. It started at "the Neighborhood Ball,'' which the president called one of the most important night.

Before the first dance, Obama asked the crowd, "How good looking is my wife?". The First Lady wore a shimmering white, one-shouldered, floor-length gown. It was embellished from top to bottom with white floral details and made by designer Jason Wu.

After an introduction from actor Denzel Washington, Obama opened an informal speech at the Ball by saying ‘First of all, how good looking is my wife?’, prompting cheers from the crowd. After a short speech, the President and First Lady then danced alone on stage as Beyonce sang.

As the song was completed the crowd started chanting ‘Obama! Obama! ’ before making way for performances by Stevie Wonder and more.

This campaign was organized by neighborhood, said Obama, calling himself a neighborhood kind of guy - at a ball in the Washington Convention Center where tickets were dispensed for little cost to a lot of people. He cut his teeth on neighborhood work, he told the crowd.

"Ad if you think about it, neighborhood starts with neighbor,'' Obama said. "This ball is the one which captures best, I think, the spirit of this campaign... We are going to need you... because together we are going to change America.''

But for now, all the president and first lady were changing were hands as they took a turn on the dance stage.

The singer, who earlier this week accidentally revealed that she would be performing the Etta James song ‘At Last’, wore a full-length cream satin dress for her performance.
