Drama queens advance, Randy and Simon play head games in latest 'American Idol'

It was off with their heads for 18 of the 54 Idol contestants as the Top 36 was finally decided. Of course, drama ensued, and way too much of it.

First of all, could the show have picked a more intimidating place to hold these final head-chopping sessions? The "judges' mansion" (huh?) looked like something out of "Sunset Boulevard," creepy, ostentatious and fear-inducing.

Some were definitely not ready for their close ups, including Detroit's emo boy Cody Shelton. I agree that the kid isn't ready yet, but what on earth were they thinking advancing Tatiana and Nat and vetoing Jamar, Danny's best friend? I don't get it.

I can't stand the thought of sitting through more of Tat and Nat's hystrionics; both of them are overwrought drama queens.

Seriously, Tatiana's a pill, though it was a savvy move to wear Paula Abdul's jewelry to her audition.

What's up with the judges' head games? Randy to Kendall, who was shaking she was so nervous: "The news isn't great...(she dies a thousand deaths and shakes harder)...It's fantastic!" I wanted to smack him.

And then Simon, using his best bedside manner, grounds Frankie into the marble floor with his icy sendoff: "If it's any consolation, you wouldn't have won anyway." That's some cold comfort, man.

At least some of my early favorites have passed through, such as Lil, Scott, Arianna, Anne Marie and Stevie. I also love Kalamazoo's Matt Giraud, and Danny, the young widower. He has such an unusual, rich, earthy voice, and a great spirit about him.

Well, the drama's not over yet, considering Tatiana is up at bat in the first group of 12 come Tuesday. Can she possibly make it farther? Please America, stop the insanity!
