Officers Lift Tree Limb, Save Man's Life

Victim Suffers Broken Pelvis, Spine

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. - Two Grass Valley police officers are credited with saving a man's life by lifting a large oak tree branch off of him.

Police were called shortly after 8 a.m. Friday after a report that 50-year-old Jon Hurst had been pinned by the large fallen limb at Lyman Gilmore Middle School as he walked his dog, Sgt. Steve Johnson said.

Officers Brian Hooper and John Herrera arrived and lifted the large limb so that Hurst could breathe. The officers called for help from other officers.

Three other officers arrived and together they were able to lift and remove the tree so Hurst could be treated and removed.

Hurst was flown by helicopter to the Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Hurst remained at the hospital as of Monday. He suffered a fractured pelvis, fractured spine and four broken ribs.

Hooper and Herrera have been nominated for a commendation.
