Finding Valentine’s love in all the right places

Finding Valentine’s love in all the right places

An abundance of legends about the beginning of Valentine’s Day reflect one common thread – it’s all about love. Houston residents will find ample opportunities to celebrate love – with or without a “significant other” as Feb. 14 approaches.

Getting an early start on Feb. 13 is one of Houston’s oldest Valentine’s events for singles. For 15 years hundreds of Houston singles have attended the KRBE /Broken Hearts Ball. Roula and Ryan from KRBE’s early morning show will host the event set for 9 to 11 p.m. at Drink Houston in the Marq*E Entertainment Center at I-10 and Silber.

“The Broken Hearts Ball is one of the keystone events sponsored by KRBE,” said Lori Doucet, event sales manager. “It’s a big event with hundreds of Houston singles participating each year. Since it’s Mardi Gras time, we’re celebrating with King’s Cake from Arandas’ Bakery and free beads. There will be a lot of cool games like a bead toss with the person who collects the most beads winning tickets to the Ne-Yo concert at Reliant on
Valentine’s Day.”

Love Bugs 2009 at The Houston Museum of Natural Science will set the mood for Valentine’s Day with a special night of dancing and romancing featuring sounds of salsa with Grupo Ka-Che. Cocktails, appetizers, a lingering stroll through the rainforest, and even a tour of the Cockrell Butterfly Center make this one of Houston’s surprisingly romantic venues. Make it a date for Feb. 13 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Art lovers can explore the “fast track” to meeting that special someone at the Winter Street Studios Open House and Valentine’s Day Speed Dating Party from 2 to 4 p.m. Winter Street is the largest community home of artists in Houston with 80 local artists located in the building. At the Speed Dating Party participants will meet 10 to 15 other eligible singles in various age groups and will spend six minutes getting to know each of their dates. Personal notes for each of the 10 to 15 dates can be made on handy Dating Cards distributed to each participant. Party-goers are invited to view the studios for more fun and entertainment.

For those who just want to connect with other “intelligent, single professionals,” Eight Friends Out, a dinner club for single professionals, may be the answer to the
Valentine’s Day dilemma. The group boasts of connecting people for 14 years with “no blind dates, no old photos, on online profiles”— just a group of fun-loving singles out for an evening on the town. Check out www.eightfriendsout.com.

For a one-of-a-kind
Valentine’s Day Celebration, Star Fleet Entertainment Yachts offers some options. There’s the Valentine’s Day Dinner Cruise, a magical gourmet dinner cruise on Clear Lake and Galveston Bay. Stroll the decks or dance the night away while sailing by the lights of the Kemah Boardwalk. Not ready to leave? Then try the “after-party”. Star Fleet’s 2009 Valentine’s Pajama Party Cruise may be just the thing for those who want something a bit more on the casual side. This cruise features a midnight buffet, party games, dancing, and a Pajama Contest. Enjoy yet another breakfast buffet, dancing, contests, and games for a Valentine’s Day to remember.

There’s nothing like laughter to ease tension with a new date. Try Mike Epps & Friends: 2009 Valentine’s Day Comedy Explosion at Houston’s Arena Theatre. Epps grew up in a home with five siblings and his mother. He entered a stand-up comedy contest in Indiana and went on to become a Def Comedy Jam phenomenon and a co-star of several films.
