Fargo's Jesse Langseth draws mixed reviews on 'Idol'
Former Fargoan and current "American Idol" hopeful Jesse Langseth sang Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" during a live telecast of "Idol" tonight. And the judges' reviews were mixed, at best.
Langseth, who used to front a bluesy rock band under the stage name Jesse Lang (she's the sister of Jonny Lang), drew praise from Paula Abdul and criticism from the show's resident "mean" judge Simon Cowell.
After Langseth's almost hushed performance that showcased the singer's use of shy vibrato, Cowell said "I think you're forgettable." He went to say "You have quite a nice voice, but it was too cool for school."
"Cool" was the word as Paula gushed over Langseth's performance. "You're cool. You got it." Abdul also called her "captivating" and said Langseth has "an identifiable sound."
Langseth got an "OK" from judge Randy Jackson who wished she had chosen a different song. And the fourth judge Kara DioGuardi commented more on Langseth's look of red, shoulder-length hair; blue, one shoulder shirt and jeans saying "This is your best look." Musically, DioGuardi said Langseth "had some issues with a few notes."
Unlike some of the night's contestants, Langseth seemed content, polite and almost gracious of what the judges said about her. She even gushed with approval after Jackson answered her question of "what would you have liked to see?" Rather than challenge the judges' opinions Langseth smiled and appeared to enjoy the moment.
Viewers can vote for Lang tonight by calling (866) IDOLS-09. Thursday night at 7 on the local Fox affiliate KVRR, channel 10 in Fargo and Moorhead, "Idol" will air again with results of the voting. If Langseth receives more votes than any other of this group's female singers, she'll move on to the "Idol" finals.
