The Scoop on Fattening Ice Cream Flavors

The Scoop on Fattening Ice Cream Flavors

Just in time for summer, Newsweek has weighed in with a list of the most-fattening ice cream flavors. In the past several years, ice creams have gotten more fattening than ever as premium brands like Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s load up their ice creams with chocolate-coated nuts, fudge-laden pretzels, decadent cake and brownie batters and even candy bars.

The result is that a bowl of ice cream may contain as many calories as some people eat in a full meal. The good news is that not every ice cream is packed with guilt. Brands including Turkey Hill and Edy’s offer a number of fun-packed flavors, like their own versions of Moose Tracks and Fudge Chunk, that are typically far lower in calories. Here are the Newsweek selections for the most-fattening flavors as well as a few alternatives I have found that offer a similar taste experience, with far fewer calories, per half-cup serving.

1. Häagen-Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter (360 calories, 24 grams of fat). Newsweek notes that ice creams packed with nuts and chocolate tend to be the most fattening. A better choice: Turkey Hill Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, which has 180 calories and 11 grams of fat.

2. Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby (330 calories, 20 grams of fat). Instead, try Snyder’s Chocolate Pretzel Light ice cream, which has 130 calories and 3.5 grams of fat.

3. Häagen-Dazs Butter Pecan (310 calories, 23 grams of fat). How could something with the words “butter” and “pecan” not be fattening? Try Turkey Hill Butter Pecan, which has 160 calories and 10 grams of fat.

4. Sheer Bliss Pomegranate With Chocolate Chips (320 calories, 20 grams fat). Pomegranate is the latest flavor rage, and chances are, more ice cream makers will invent their own versions. Until then, try Blue Bunny’s Mango Pomegranate yogurt, which has 60 calories and no fat.

5. Ben and Jerry’s Vermonty Python (300 calories, 19 grams of fat). It’s tough to find a replacement for coffee ice cream with chocolate cookie crumbs and fudge cows, but you can find a similar flavor in Edy’s Cappuccino Chip yogurt blend, which has 110 calories and 3.5 grams of fat.

6. Coldstone Cookie Batter (300 calories, 16 grams of fat). Nobody ever eats just half a cup of Coldstone. The smallest “Like It” serving, which is larger than a half-cup, has 380 calories and 20 grams of fat. Tasti D Lite Cake Batter frozen yogurt has 80 calories and 2 fat grams in a half-cup serving.
